Linux Hosting (cPanel) Help

Change my email destination

If you want to use a different email service, you'll need to update your MX records to match those given to you by your email provider.

Change your cPanel's email destination

  1. Log in to your GoDaddy account and open your product. (Need help opening your product?)
  2. Click cPanel Admin.
  3. In the Domains section, click Zone Editor.
  4. Choose the domain that you want to configure from the drop-down menu.
  5. Click MX Record, under the Actions column, enter the information from your email provider, and click Add an MX Record.

Note: To prevent possible issues with your email service, start with Priority 10 instead of 0 for the added MX records.

After you've made the changes to your MX records, wait 48 hours for DNS propagation to take place. During this time, email may be delivered to either your cPanel email accounts or your email provider. If you don’t mind downtime, or your email isn’t working, feel free to proceed.

Finalize your changes

  1. In the Email section of your cPanel account, click Email Routing.
  2. Select Remote Mail Exchanger, and then click Change.
  3. Click Zone Editor in the Note at the top of the page.
  4. Select Manage under the Actions column for the domain name that you want to change.
  5. In the Zone Records section, next to the Priority 0 MX record with the Destination that is your domain name, click Delete.
  6. Click Continue.

While this change propagates, email sent to your domain name may be delivered to the email address on your cPanel shared hosting account.
