Enable Secondary DNS with GoDaddy nameservers as slaves

Secondary DNS allows you to have your domain's zone file backed up automatically onto a second set of nameservers. If the first set of nameservers goes down, it'll automatically send requests to the backups, which will have a zone file identical to the master nameservers. You must have Premium DNS on your domain to use Secondary DNS. You cannot use DNSSEC and Secondary DNS on the same domain name.

To use GoDaddy nameservers as the slave (secondary) nameservers, you'll need to make sure your own nameservers are set as the master (primary) nameservers. You'll need to configure your own nameservers as the master (primary) set to accept AXFR requests from our slave nameservers, and be set up to send NOTIFY requests to our slave nameservers.

Note: If you set GoDaddy nameservers as slaves, your zone file becomes read-only. All DNS changes will need to be made to the master nameserver set.

  1. Log in to your GoDaddy Domain Control Center. (Need help logging in? Find your username or password.)
  2. Select your domain name from the list to access the Domain Settings page.
  3. Under Additional Settings, select Manage DNS.
  4. Under Advanced Features, select Secondary DNS.
  5. Under Enabled, select On.
  6. Select Slave on the Configure zone as drop-down menu.
  7. Select ADD below Designate masters, then enter the details for each section:
    • Start IP Address: Enter the beginning of the IPV4 IP address range for your master nameservers.
    • End IP Address: Enter the end of the IPV4 IP address range for your master nameservers.
    • TSIG Type: Select the algorithm (hash function) to use for authenticating your transactions. If you don't want to use TSIG, select None.
    • TSIG Name: Enter a unique name for the TSIG key.
    • TSIG Value: Enter a value for the TSIG key. This value is a password that both nameserver sets share and use to authenticate requests.
  8. Select ADD below Allow notify from:, then enter the details for each section:
    • Start IP Address: Enter the beginning of the IPV4 IP address range for your master nameservers.
    • End IP Address: Enter the end of the IPV4 IP address range for your master nameservers.
  9. Select Update, then Apply to save your changes.

All DNS changes can take 24 - 48 hours to fully update across global networks.
