What is a favicon?

A favicon (short for favorites icon) is a small image for your website that can be seen on a browser tab. (See below)

Favicons will also usually appear in a browser's list of saved or bookmarked pages. Sometimes that extra little bit of polish can help your website stand out from the competition.

Are favicons still used?

Yes, absolutely. Most businesses will use their main logo or a simplified version, like the first letter of their business name, so it appears clearly next to their site’s title in the browser tab.

Do all websites have a favicon?

Not every website will have a favicon, but most businesses will include a favicon as part of their overall branding strategy.

How can I add a favicon to my site?

You can add a favicon, without the hassle of coding, using your Websites + Marketing website builder.

Upload a square .PNG, .ICO, .JPG or .JPEG image file. We recommended the dimensions of 180px by 180px for your favicon to appear crisp.

Do favicons help with SEO?

It isn’t clear if Google, or any other search engine, accounts for favicons when determining a site’s overall ranking. However, favicons can still help your site stand out visually for visitors.

What should my favicon look like?

Highly intricate images may not translate well to such a small image size. It’s best to keep the detail low and number of colors to a minimum. Simple typography or iconography work best. Focus on using the main brand colors for maximum effect.

Why is my website favicon not showing?

Check that your image has been successfully uploaded to your Websites + Marketing site. You may also need to clear your browser’s cache.
